Nuestro Juramento - Ecuador

“As Latin people, we tend to feel emotions very deeply”

Jhoan Andres Caisaguano

What is the song about? What does the song mean?

The lyrics of "Nuestro Juramento" – Spanish for “Our oath” - are about an eternal promise of love, even beyond death. The lovers swear to continue loving each other, even if one of them dies. If the man dies first, the woman promises to shed her tears over his grave and show her love for him to the world. If she dies first, the man promises to write the story of their love with his own blood.

Why is the song so well known in your country of origin?

Julio Jaramillo is one of our country’s most famous singers, and his songs popularized the genre "pasillo" throughout South America. This song is special because it was not written by him, yet it gained world fame due to his voice and guitar. The intense emotion strikes a chord with the Ecuadorian audience, making the song one of the most beloved boleros in Latin America. It is often played at funerals and memorials and has become deeply rooted in Ecuadorian folk culture. Especially in Guayaquil, Julio Jaramillo’s hometown, it is regarded as a national heritage.

What special meaning does the song have for you?

I chose this song because there is no Ecuadorian who cannot recognize this melody! This song encapsulates the Latin and Ecuadorian feeling about what it means to love and be loved, it describes an oath to continue loving even if we stop breathing. Nowadays, it has become an anthem about unconditional love; as Latin people, we tend to feel emotions very deeply!

Tell us something about yourself. Who are you?

My name is Jhoan Andres Caisaguano. I am 25 years old and was born in Riobamba-Ecuador. I came to the Netherlands six years ago to study Civil Engineering at the University of Twente. Two years ago I got my bachelor diploma. Just a few months later I got a job in Apeldoorn, but I am still living in Enschede because I got used to this beautiful city and all my friends and social activities are here. Besides, I am a music lover, I love spending time in record stores, I collect vinyls and enjoy playing the guitar with my friends. From time to time, I also work as DJ for Rico Latino and Latin events for the university, so maybe someone will recognize me in the reggaeton-salsa-bachata scene.
