Dodo Titite - Haiti

“It is wonderful that a song from my home country will be played in the city where I have lived for so long”

Jennyca Herik

What is the song about?

“Dodo Titite” (also known as “Dodo Ti Pitit”) is a traditional Haitian lullaby sung by mothers to help their babies fall asleep. The title literally means “Sleep, little one.” In the song, the mother speaks gently to her child, sometimes adding playful or slightly teasing lines like “the crab will eat you if you don’t go to sleep.” These words aren’t meant to scare but to soothe and amuse the child.

The song expresses deep maternal love and reflects the warmth and closeness of family life in Haiti. It also shows how Haitian folk songs often mix tenderness, everyday imagery, and poetic simplicity, creating music that feels both intimate and authentic.

Why is the song so loved and well known in Haiti?

The song is loved because it is one of the first songs most Haitians hear as children. It has been passed down from generation to generation, becoming a vital part of the country’s oral and musical heritage. Its gentle melody and touching lyrics about care and protection evoke feelings of comfort, nostalgia, and connection.

Beyond being a lullaby, it symbolizes the resilience and beauty of Haitian culture — how music continues to bring peace, love, and identity even in challenging times. For many Haitians, Dodo Titite is more than a song; it is a tender memory of home, family, and belonging.

What special meaning does the song have for you?

Unfortunately, I have very few memories of Haiti, my native country. Therefore, the song holds no special meaning for me. I think that is a great pity. That is why it is so wonderful that a song from my home country will be played in the city where I have lived for so long now.
