Maček Muri - Slovenia

“I love singing the song because it sounds like home”

Meta Leban Buschenhenke

What is the song about? What does the song mean?

The song is about Maček Muri, a polite and well-behaved cat who wakes up in the morning, gets dressed, and then goes to the café "At the Happy Cow" for breakfast. There, he reads the newspaper, pays promptly, and then strolls through the cat city. The song describes, in a cheerful and playful way, a morning in the life of a cat who behaves like a human.

Why is the song so well known in your country of origin?

Maček Muri is originally a children's book that has been around for 50 years. The book and the song are very well-known and beloved in Slovenia. In Slovenia, the cat Maček Muri is a national icon (comparable to Miffy and Dikkie Dik in the Netherlands). Children love it because it is cheerful and funny, with beautiful rhymes and relatable situations. Many Slovenians grew up with it, making the song an important and nostalgic part of their childhood.

What special meaning does the song have for you?

The book "Maček Muri" was read to me when I was a child, I read it myself, and now I read it to my children too. I still love singing the song because it sounds like home.
